Difficult SPM Chemistry Paper 2?

I just came back from meeting in Mentakab.

In the meeting we were told that many students were lost while answering the Chemistry 2 paper in the exams hall last week.

The reason given was the questions in the paper were difficult and out of normal Q and A.

In fact I have seen the paper. The questions are not difficult. I dare say that it's easy. The standard has lowered than what I had expected.

I got no worry that my students will score good grades because the passing mark will be lowered by someone who hold power.

The paper needs thinking skills ,understanding and applications of knowledge.

The scenario in the schools and tuitions is to impart memorisation of knowlegde without emphasis on skills.

We are one of the unlucky students trained by them.

We don't think out of box.

So change our attitudes in study in order to get good grades in exams.

Shopping in Beijing

In Beijing we went to a shopping mall named Ya Shiu market.

The market is selling all sorts of daily necessities like clothes, shoes, mobile phones, cameras ,travelling bags and others.

All the stuff are cheap and attractive in terms of pricing and quality.

It has many stalls manned by young girls and boys.

I notice they are very well-versed in business skills to woo customers to buy.

They are fluent in different national languages like Bahasa Melaysia, Russia, Turkey ......

They are able to make communications interesting to allow customers to bargain.

I bought a mobile phone bargained from RBM850 to RMB340.

My friend bought a warm clothing bargained from RMB18000 to RMB2000

A pair of shoes bargained from RMB750 to RMB70

I am sure you will love to shop there.

tang hu lu

In Beijing I came to know about "tang hu lu" on road side hawker.

Tang hu lu is actually made from fruits.

The fruits are arranged like our satay here.

Instead of meat they use fruits like oranges, peach etc.

Then they dip the fruits into sugar syrup.

It's sweet and tasty.

It costs me about 50 cents per stick.

It's my first taste of tang hu lu.

I like it.

2009 UPSR results

The education ministry’s first Aptitude Test for Year Six students during their UPSR exams has shown that only 5.7 per cent (29,084 students) out of 509,885 pupils are skilled at problem solving and decision making, and only 34.34 per cent (175,101) in skilled thinking.
Education Director-General Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said today that this indicated that the children needed more training on problem-solving and decision-making.

We need to take this report as a lesson for us to prepare ahead for our future training in the universities.

We can't afford to lose sight of skills in problem solving and skilled thinking.

Lets discard the habits of waiting for soalan bocor during examinations.

It destroys us.

All As in exams

4 days to go for the year end school holidays.

Absenteeism is high in my school.

So no lessons are conducted.

I have more time to do preparations for my teaching next year.

I have just analysed my lower 6 students performance in my final year exams.

They have 100% passes.

They are good SPM students.
Many of them have 1A in chemistry.
Six of them from SMKSR.
Two from Mahmud
and 1 from Lipis.

So I have high expectations of them scoring good results in STPM chemistry next year.

My targeted results is all As.

I told them this morning that they need to have habits of asking and note making.

By asking we can clear all problems in study.

By making note we are doing revision.

Chinese says: wen gu zhi xin

Facebook?

I have joined Facebook for a few months already.

I am able to make contacts with many friends especially with my past students.

It is interesting to read their chats and their undertakings in different areas.

One distinguished feature in Facebook is many of us are focusing on games and psychology tests.

I find them of no use at all. They can't bring us any improvement or positive changes in our daily chores.

We should pay more attention on communications and exchange of news or knowledge.

The viewing of photos of friends is good for us to know further about them.

Anyway it's good to have Facebook.

It's snowing in Beijing in China on last Tuesday.

I have feeling of excitement.

I am excited because it's my first tour to China on this Friday.

Beijing is a historical and ancient city in China. It offers variety of ancient buildings and ancient life styles for us to see and to snap photos. I will be going to visit Tiananmen square, ancient temples. Ming dynasty's tombs, Hutong ancient town and the emperor's summer resorts in Chengde.

The snowing is also an attraction for me. But the cold will be a challenge.

My friends told me that the Chinese businessman there are not honest.

They will cheat us on buying their fake clothes, fake medicinal foods, fake notes, and others.

I am advised not be duped into their traps of buying.

Besides they told me that their toilets are in terrible and horrible states in terms of hygiene.

I am so curious to discover such negative behaviours of Chinese in China.

1000 engineers?

Last week I was attracted to a piece of news stating that Penang Government couldn't guarantee the availability of 1000 engineers for a foreign company intending to invest in Penang.

I am surprised to know the bad situation in our beloved nation.

We have created many new universities to provide tertiary education to all rakyat.

We are planning to produce many masters and Phds within a time frame which I have forgotten.

I am sure of many engineers in our country.

Some are so experienced.

Some are not so experienced.

Some are creative.

Some are book worms.

Some are so innovative.

Some are so dead.

Some are .......................

You help to fill in blanks.

Why doesn't dare the Penang government take the challenge to look for 1000 engineers ?

I wonder.

May be you know the answer.

Hahahahaha

Tibetian Funeral

What is life?

We are composed of elements and mind.

The elements will go back to the nature when we have no breath.

Our mind will continue the journey to the next cycle of life.

So we need to cultivate our mind to be always positive.

Do good.
Avoid evils.

What is the use?

It's for our last breath.

Jungle woman in Cambodia

She was 18 years lost in the jungles of northeast Cambodia. She has forgotten what hot water is.

She was found and brought to stay in a safe home.

The girl has already tried to flee once, tearing off her clothes to rush back into the jungle.

She is trying to get used to life among the family that has claimed her as their long-lost daughter and spends her days and nights watching the films or sitting glassy-eyed while curious locals come to stare at her.

They attribute the girl’s loss of speech and traumatized behavior to 18 years as the companion of a jungle spirit who has now abandoned her.

She was naked and walking in a bending-forward position like a monkey, exactly like a monkey.

What is life?

Which life is better?

The jungle or the city?

Teachers' attire in schools

Sin Chew News reports that many teachers don't wear proper attire in schools.

It mentions that female teachers are more obvious.

They have tight skirts, tight shirts, tight blouse and clothing which reveals and exposes their body shapes.

It states that they are not morally right in schools.

They are supposed to follow code of ethics as teachers.

They are supposed to show good examples to students.

Besides, it says their hair are dyed with all colours.

I am sure you have noticed such in your school.

Mostly they are younger teachers.

Hahaha.

Absenteeism in school

Lately absenteeism in my school is quite high.

May be it's the culture of my school.

I don't really know the reasons for my students absenteeism.

Some say that no lessons are on in their class.

Some say that their subject teachers are not in the school.

Some say that they prefer to study at home.

Some say that they will be absent from the class which they dislike.

What is your view about the problem of absenteeism?

I don't support absenteeism.

It will tarnish the name of the school.

It reflects the negative behaviour of the students.

Please don't play truant.

Survey about teaching and learning methods

I am doing a survey about our tuitions.

I would like to know whether the methods used are suitable for you or not.

You are invited to participate in the survey.

The results will help me and you to further improve my teaching and your learning.

Hopefully you could help inform your friends about the survey.

The more the participants, the higher the accuracy of the result of the survey.

Festival of light

Happy Deepavali to you.

It is a festival of light for Hindus.

In Buddhism light is a symbolic of happiness.

When you have no light, you are in darkness.

When you have light, you are not in darkness.

We don't like darkness.

Darkness frightens us.

Darkness disappoints us.

Darkness gives no happiness.

So seek light in your life.

Their successes are my success.

The happiness can't be measured and compared to monetary gains.

Hopefully you and your friends will gain from my tuitions and guides in your coming exams.

Study my notes.

Do more exercises and repeat them.

If you have improved in exams usng my advice, do introduce me to your younger friends to my tuition classes.

Thank you.

Failure in Additional Mathematics

17 failures in Additional Mathematics trial 2009 in the 1st class of my school.

Surprised?

I am surprised.

Additional Mathematics is a subject which needs a lot of repeating exercises.
One need the skills to apply the formula given in solving problems.
One requires to understand and interpret the mathematics language in the questions.
One needs to do some sketches and diagrams.
One needs to have strong algebraic skills.
One have to look at the questions as a whole.

You just can't depend totally on memorising skills.

Stones in kidney

My colleague complained of pain in his kidney yesterday.
After examinations, he is confirmed to have stones in his kidney.

Why there are stones in our body?

It may be caused by the internal structure of our kidney which can accumulate ions.

It may be caused by taken in too much salts in our foods.

May be ..........

Sorry, I am not a doctor.

Drinking three litres of water a day will help to rid of the stones from our body.

Water is good for us.

Why trial results have improved?

I am happy to hear news from my students that their trial SPM results have improved compared to their mid-year exams results.

I am always curious to know their methods of study at home.

These are their methods:

Revise and revise.
Solving problems.
Writing answers.
Asking questions.

Open Book Tests

Today is the 1st day of school after the 10 days of Raya Holidays.
They are only 5 in my lower 6 class.
2 were absent and 1 was on medical leave.

I told them that an evaluation test will be conducted to check their understanding of Chemistry.
They refused on the grounds that they are very busy and has no time to do the preparation for the test.

So I inquired the method to help them in Chemistry.
They suggested an open book test.

Their suggestion is quite acceptable.

Open book test can help them to do reference and to check whether they are familiar with the contents in the books.

I will do it for them.

Pulau Ketam

I am going for a day's tour to Pulau Ketam tomorrow.

The pulau is a fishing island. A small village. Dirty. No tourist attractions.

Just curious.

Some say the sea food there is tasty.

I wonder.

What Exams?

I receive a call to attend a course in KL at the end of October.

I am asked to prepare a research paper on action research done in the class.

Besides, I need to prepare a public speech also on internal and external motivations.

ai........

You see I got exams also.

Please help me.

Give me your opinions about whether internal motivation is more lasting and important than external motivation.

Avoidable Accident

I was having char koay teo at the stall opposite Radha restaurant just now.

Suddenly a car turned into the road to the stall so quick that it knocked down a motorist heading to KL.

I saw the whole episode. The car driver was at fault. He should n't have driven so fast without giving any signal to the motorist.

They quarrelled. They argued. They bargained about the compensation for the damage done to the motorist.

So I hope that we will drive our cars and motors with high attention and better care.
Be watchful on the road.

I have changed

Teaching is my life.

I always intend to imporvise my teaching methods in the classes.

I always try my best to use variety of ways in imparting skills and knowledge to my students under my charge.

When I am younger, my teaching is only limited to materials in text books.
I seldom used other materials.
My skills was limited.
I just wanted to complete the specified syllabus only.
I didn't bother about my students' learning pace.
i didn't care about their emotional development.

Now, I have changed.

I will try my best to help all students to understand skills and knowledge imparted on them.
So questions and answers sessions are my way.
I like to pose questions to them hoping that they will think further about problems given.
They will apply learned knowledge in solving the problems.
They will not depend on memorising alone.

Be proactive to ask in classes.

Non-attachemnet

Happy Raya holidays this friday.

I would like to share with you about 'non-attachment' in our daily practice.

It means we should not be attached to our likes and dislikes.

We should let go our stubbornness.

We should let go our anger.

We should let go our laziness.

We should let go our wicked thought.

We should be harmless in our actions.

We should be good in our speech.

We should let go our ill-feelings.

The sms received by them showed the actual questions in the trial papers.

I got nothing to comment.

I am always against bocor soalan .

My reminder to students :

They will destroy your future.

They will ruin your mind.

Co-curricular Marks

Co-curricular marks is one of the important criteria when applying for scholarships or intake into public universities.

It is assessed based on 3 types of activities as follows.

1. Uniform societies
2.Clubs or societies
3. Games

Marks are given based on our participations and performance in the above activities.

So aware of this.

Be participative and proactive.

Poor 2009 PMR Trial Results

I would like to share with you about our district 2009 PMR trial results.

SMK School % Passes GPS
Tengku Abdullah 97.62 1.90
Seri Raub 92.50 2.18
MGS 53.01 2.99
Tersang 38.75 3.47
Chung Ching 38.39 3.28
Shahbandar 32.08 3.69
Dong 30.73 3.83
Sungai Ruan 27.89 3.85
Mahmud 41.09 3.39
Tengku Kudin 23.96 3.79

SMK Mahmud is my school. It is already 101 years in history since 1908. It has gained high respect from the locals.

The results don't show the excellence in academic.

Sad.

My Principal had given a detail analysis in the morning assembly today.

His analysis includes the following.

1. The result shows that our students did not put in enough effort in study.
2. It is not racial biased because SMK Tersang did give a better result than Mahmud and Chung Ching.
3. It is not affected by community environment whether in kampung or bandar.

He said the only factor that produced such a bad result is the attitudes of students.
Lazy and don't pay much emphasis on exams.

I pray that all my students are not lazy.

I pray that all my students will strive for excellence in all public exams : PMR ,SPM and STPM.

It is about 64 days before the 2009 SPM and STPM exams.

My students should be hard working in preparing the exams.

They should be doing a lot of revisions.

They should be busy solving variety of problems.

I always advice them to be inqusitive and curious about any problems and questions in their revisions.

They must consult and ask their friends and techers for answers.
